Odate Mage WappaOdate Bentwood Work

When Yoshinobu Satake who was military commander of Toyotomi who lost in the Battle of Sekigahara was made to move from Mito that was previous territory to Akita by Tokugawa shogunate government, as for the living of citizen of territory of Akita, there was even person who was in trouble for food on the poorly at all day.
Satake west family which became the Odate lord of a castle gave lower grade samurais an order to break poor state using abundant forest resource in the territory and we bent as side business and recommended production of bentwood ware. In addition, it is told farmer to have let raw wood progress as substitute for land tax rice from mountain to castle bottom. Product was carried to Sakata, Niigata, Kanto.

Satake Yoshinobu was a military commander who fought with Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Hideyoshi was vanquished and Satake was ordered by the Tokugawa Shogunate to move from his former domain of Mito to Akita in the extreme north of Honshu. He found the people there were very poor and some did not even have enough to eat. As castellans of Odate castle, the western branch of Satake family set about trying to relieve the poverty of their people by using the rich supplies of timber to be found in the fief.
First, low ranking warriors were ordered to make bentwood goods on a part-time basis. Then, instead of paying their annual tribute in rice, the people were made to fetch the wood required for this bentwood work down from the surrounding mountains. There was soon enough work to sell in such places as Sakata, Niigata and far off Edo and its environs.

Full advantage is taken of the grain and scent of Akita's own supplies of cedar wood, which is also highly flexible. Exemplifying the concept of simple is beautiful, this craft makes the most of the fine grade timber with its fresh red and pale yellow coloring combined with its beautifully tight grain and lightness. They produce tubs for rice, water jugs, trays of various kinds, bento boxes, and even coffee cups and beer tankards. All are beautiful examples of a simple craft.

    Process 2: Boiling

We soak machined material in water approximately one in the evening thinly and soften to boil with boiling water before bending for several minutes, and to be easy to bend sheet.

    Process 3: Bending

Process 4: Drying, the adhesion, birch sewing (we close birch)

After drying, we put on top of one another and dry part with adhesive in the adhesion, approximately two night and day. We close junction and fasten with birch using former flat "needle".

Demand as container for starch syrup of Tsugaru leaves tradition of Odate Mage Wappa

"Bending" and the good traditions are scattered in various parts of Japan formally. In the 17th century, Odate castle warden Satake west house at the time used abundant forest resource in the territory and gave lower grade samurais an order to break poverty of feudal clan and recommended production of "bending bentwood ware" as side business, and the tradition reached this ground. In "the times of father, we were overwhelmed by thing such as plastic and aluminum, and demand decreased sharply. But it was useful as container of special product "starch syrup" of Aomori, Tsugaru and could maintain constant demand and was able to survive The making of product which mood "which after all we would leave as traditional industrial art object." increased, and matched modern needs seemed to begin afterwards.

Kurimori of bentwood ware craftsman talking about the traditional skill hot
It was born in 1948. The sixth generation of well-established "kurikyu." That there are many fans listening attentively to witty style of reciting not to think of to be craftsman unintentionally

A word of wife who made me as today's craftsman

"We called teacher of design from Tokyo and studied. From teacher of one who attended to in my home once "bending in own house where wife is why, and not using bentwood ware" This being asked about, and there being "shi inikuindesummono. And when it is bulky and repeats, we slip ...." Wife has told this." Talk about thunderbolt of fine weather. "But oneself knew what to do in it." It was opportunity, and this event was the first among the industry, and conic bentwood ware and dai bentwood ware with which was not slippery even if we repeated were completed. Then much new item bentwood wares which it is easy to use more are completed without adding much improvement in situation of person to employ, and spoiling design and the traditional beauty.

Small dish which was improved so that it was repeated by adding ring to bottom one more

When do the same work in parent and child; the cause of quarrel?

Kurimori is the sixth generation of long-established store "kurikyu". "After all we liked making something since it was small. High school went to local woodwork department, but learned the quality of tree at time." This quality seems to be useful for the new making of product and improvement. "Father was craftsman of "Kaba Zaiku" not bentwood ware. Younger brother that is uncle of father did bentwood ware. There was rivalry to uncle, too, and oneself began bentwood ware. Whether it was just good as we did not need to clash with each other in parent and child if we thought ...." By the way, son of university student seemed to come to Kurimori now, but nothing said whether you wanted to bend and to inherit bentwood ware.

You do upward by all means if you finish using, and please dry

"Anyway, please protect only this. It is art to let you last a long time beautifully." We are apt to treat in the same way as just dish, but place of corner seems to turn black in particular without turning down, and water evaporating enough when we put for a long time. "Even anyone knew unvanished wooden thing in old days even if we turned anything down first for several minutes even if we made pail to drain off drop of water to do upward. Do not feel that Japanese tradition is lost from such a thing from life." We have in * for 20 years if we treat definitely. Of course you seemed to be able to repair when it ached.

It leads to mountains of production center and protecting water to use traditional thing

"Place where characteristic of bentwood ware shows only straight-grained board of tree. As Kiguchi (at cut end of tree) does not appear, we do not turn black and are hard to ache. As we use for it with tree as thin board, it is light." We make use of the characteristic and are producing "bath basin" experimentally now. It "is craftsman that do how you make using own skill after hearing needs of customer in thought, form. It is not thing when you should make various things haphazardly." Such Kurimori runs around the whole country to hear needs. "But we do not still get nature Akita cedar which there became little from 2007. As we do not get wide straight-grained board board with tree of afforestation, we cannot make long cylindrical thing. What would do to it; the current problem? Good bentwood ware is not done when we do not protect mountain and forest well." Because many people review, and they use, for example, this "bending bentwood ware", we may be connected in protecting forest of Akita.

Natural Akita ceder is renowned for its fine straight wood grain, rich scent and strong elasticity. The light wood, neatly lined up bright red and pale yellow annual tree rings of the wood grain all combine create a product abundant in simple, elegant beauty.

How to make

Hand breaks natural Akita cedar or * comes over by sawing thinly and attaches to boiling water. We take up when board softens and bend as if rolling up in tool called kolo on stand and let you put on top of one another and temporarily fasten part and naturally dry. After drying, it is closed and pierces after gluing part of coupling together with adhesive and we sew this hole with skin of cherry tree and stop. We put cover (cover) board or baseplate and we adhere and finish.

Natural Akita ceder is first either peeled by hand or using a saw mill, and the peeled wood is placed in hot water. Once the wood has softened, it is taken from the water and wrapped around a roller to curve the wood. The overlapping wood is then fastened, and the piece is allowed to dry naturally. After the wood has dried, overlapping flaps are fastened with glue, the fastening holes are opened, and cherry bark is used to sew the pieces together. The lid and bottom are then inserted and glued to finish the product.
