Kyo HyoguKyoto Art Mountings
Opening dates back to the Heian era. We were intended that mounting passed and put cloth on ya painting and calligraphic work, and to reinforce in those days. For preservation and appreciation, we did hemming or lining with cloth or paper in painting and calligraphic works and prepared to hanging scroll and sum, and it came to treat the "mounting" to do on screen and screen, sliding paper-door public afterwards.
As for hanging scroll, rolled drapery, the picture mounting, screen and screen, sliding paper-door are used for everyday life of standard home as partition, protection from the wind of room, blindfold business for decoration use of Japanese-style rooms such as tokonomas among Kyo Hyogu again.
Art mounting dates back to the Heian period (794-1185), when pieces of artwork, calligraphy and the Sutras were strengthened by backing them with fabric. Later, calligraphy and paintings were backed or edged with paper or fabric for display or to help protect them.
Gradually mounting came into much more general use for fusuma, hanging scrolls and frames as well as for folding and single-leaf freestanding screens. Hanging scrolls, hand scrolls and frames are used to decorate the tokonoma or alcove in a traditional Japanese room; and fusuma, folding and single-leaf freestanding screens are used on a daily basis in the home as partitions, screens or simply to cutout draughts.
Sustained by Kyoto's beautiful environment and the refined aesthetic taste of its people, the development of art mounting here was also help by the climate conditions of the Kyoto basin with its high levels of humidity. Mounting techniques which reflected the aesthetic taste of the tea masters were perfected with the appearance of the tokonoma and when the tea ceremony became popular from the end of the 16th century and on into the Edo period (1600-1868). Screens of many kinds are even today one of the main items made, along with the mounting of hanging scrolls and hand scrolls.

It was supported by beautiful environment of Kyoto and refined sense of beauty of person from Kyoto and developed partly because climate of humid basin was suitable for the making of mounting. In addition, mounting which reflected sense of beauty of masters of tea ceremony was completed because we hung in the Edo era from outbreak and last years of tokonoma of Muromachi era, and tea ceremony became popular.
The craft of making picture framers has developed as a consequence of the humid climate of the Kyoto basin and has been sustained by Kyoto’s beautiful environment and the refined sense of beauty of its inhabitants. To complete the picture, consider also the introduction of the Tokonoma alcove for displaying artworks and flowers as well as the popularity of the tea ceremony from the late Muromachi period through the Edo era and the fact that picture framers reflect the aesthetics of the tea masters.
How to make
Hanging scroll, rolled drapery put paper on the back of this newspaper and cloth with paste and reinforce and line at the whole all-out more after having let you join each part. We put paper with paste in order of lining, tension, facing on the frame, and sliding paper-door, screen, screen repeat and fit bounds last.
Scrolls and hanging scrolls are reinforced by gluing sheets of paper to the the back of the main paper or fabric surface and, after all parts have been joined together, the whole set is further reinforced. As for the fusuma (sliding screen), the byobu (folding screen), the tsuitate (partition), etc., the paper is glued on the base sheet, the sheet and the surface sheet in this order on the frame, and finally the external frame is put in place.
