Kyo HyoguKyoto Art Mountings

Opening dates back to the Heian era. We were intended that mounting passed and put cloth on ya painting and calligraphic work, and to reinforce in those days. For preservation and appreciation, we did hemming or lining with cloth or paper in painting and calligraphic works and prepared to hanging scroll and sum, and it came to treat the "mounting" to do on screen and screen, sliding paper-door public afterwards.
As for hanging scroll, rolled drapery, the picture mounting, screen and screen, sliding paper-door are used for everyday life of standard home as partition, protection from the wind of room, blindfold business for decoration use of Japanese-style rooms such as tokonomas among Kyo Hyogu again.

Art mounting dates back to the Heian period (794-1185), when pieces of artwork, calligraphy and the Sutras were strengthened by backing them with fabric. Later, calligraphy and paintings were backed or edged with paper or fabric for display or to help protect them.
Gradually mounting came into much more general use for fusuma, hanging scrolls and frames as well as for folding and single-leaf freestanding screens. Hanging scrolls, hand scrolls and frames are used to decorate the tokonoma or alcove in a traditional Japanese room; and fusuma, folding and single-leaf freestanding screens are used on a daily basis in the home as partitions, screens or simply to cutout draughts.

Sustained by Kyoto's beautiful environment and the refined aesthetic taste of its people, the development of art mounting here was also help by the climate conditions of the Kyoto basin with its high levels of humidity. Mounting techniques which reflected the aesthetic taste of the tea masters were perfected with the appearance of the tokonoma and when the tea ceremony became popular from the end of the 16th century and on into the Edo period (1600-1868). Screens of many kinds are even today one of the main items made, along with the mounting of hanging scrolls and hand scrolls.

  • Close-up

We let charm of work become more attractive for refined sense of beauty

We draw characteristic of this newspaper (work) and mounting is not too much outstanding…. High technique and Kyo Hyogu characterized by delicate sense of beauty are said to be the best refined mounting in Japan. Culture only in Kyoto and the historic change affect deeply there.

Kyo Hyogu which adapted itself to in everyday life, and developed

Mounting was transmitted from Chugoku with Buddhism and began because we prepared scroll of sutras (we feel today). We come to produce Buddhist painting image for worship before long, and this becomes the basis of current mounting (hanging scroll axially installs). When tokonoma is laid in the Middle Ages by Shoin-zukuri after the Heian era, and we hang in Momoyama, the Edo era from last years of Muromachi, and tea ceremony prospers, and pictures spread, mounting that we put together comes to be put for shape and contents of lifestyle and painting and calligraphic work, art each. Kyo Hyogu said to be the Japan's most refined mounting has been brought about for a long time by this historic change of Kyoto that was the center of politics and culture. "It was discussed about the specifications repeatedly and, between master of tea ceremony and writer, painter, was forged. In that way sanhonkorefu where it acts as director of Kyo Hyogu cooperative association combination fair now to talk so about that we think that unique elegance has been cultivated.

General art which technique and sense and aesthetic sensitivity weave

Paper hanger lived with cultured person and Masato of each time through art of "book" and "picture" said to be this newspaper. That is why specialized knowledge of tea ceremony and flower arrangement that we only persuaded into severe aesthetic sense of they Masato was demanded from paper hanger. "We understand meaning of this newspaper and complete mounting in combination in sympathy with intention and background. Saying such a delicate technique and sense and aesthetic sensitivity have been required; Yamamoto. We were born in house of paper hanger and lived as craftsman of this way 50 years by oneself. "Thing which does not attract attention too much and sees for a long time, and wears well." It soaked in heart all too soon. "Thing to think to be, "it is good" is gathered regardless of the object by this one point".

In anything, feeling toward this newspaper is the same

For paper hanger, feeling opposite to treasure (this newspaper) of each house which I took says that it is the same regardless of evaluation of painting and calligraphic work itself. If feeling of person leaving this newspaper with paper hanger in anything is same. Kyo Hyogu draw charm of this newspaper to the maximum taking the world in background of this newspaper into account. The heart is inherited in heart of current paper hanger ceaselessly.

We bet dream of manufacturing on tradition of 1,000 years

"The world that was much better traditional technique that originally there was if we touched badly even if mounting challenged for better thing to do new combination." We say that it is such difficult. The present when house environment of people greatly changes from Japanese old house to westernized house. Paper hangers who built up painting and calligraphic work to hanging scroll, sliding paper-door (sliding paper-door), sum, screen (screen), rolled drapery (of firewood), sketchbook (goose) explore means of escape new again while "Japanese-style room" and "tokonoma" are vanishing. Simply because is such times; even if "take out Kyo Hyogu in exhibition, design and technique and sense want to provide high-level thing which is not stolen so easy. It was like that “ and, on seeing it, was in kouiumonoga Japan. This wants to make "Kyo Hyogu" da "and thing having you feel with one and hits gen to all of associations saying "we will do so". We cannot protect only by being going to follow tradition of Kyo Hyogu more than these 1,000 years. When they do not begin defense and can maintain the current situation only after point still challenging more towards point, words of Yamamoto are hot. "It being difficult to tell own thing thinking of to person." We will think that it is that it "is important that craftsman conveys thought of creator by oneself" from now on. Therefore it is said that the paper hanger establishes "intention of own work and place explaining" in mounting exhibitions saying it "is made own study by all means". We say that it is problem of Yamamoto as director joining person and thing together.

    Craftsman profile

    sanhonkorefu (we go to Yamamoto)

S10 two a year 27 a month Nissei. Master of Kyo Hyogu.
Association of Kyo Hyogu cooperative association society's director
Kyo Hyogu Master of Traditional Crafts examination chairperson
We act as Kyo Hyogu Master of Traditional Crafts society's advisor.

A certain presence of mind flavor wearing well

With change of lifestyle, Japanese-style room and tokonomas decrease from house.
It is sure that person for taste of Japanese-style increases to interior in one side. "Hanging scroll" displayed in "tokonoma" is originally hung on the tops of console as "interior to let you feel season" in parlor of flooring.
Kyo Hyogu with quiet flavor wearing well has mysterious charms to melt into this new life space.

It was supported by beautiful environment of Kyoto and refined sense of beauty of person from Kyoto and developed partly because climate of humid basin was suitable for the making of mounting. In addition, mounting which reflected sense of beauty of masters of tea ceremony was completed because we hung in the Edo era from outbreak and last years of tokonoma of Muromachi era, and tea ceremony became popular.

The craft of making picture framers has developed as a consequence of the humid climate of the Kyoto basin and has been sustained by Kyoto’s beautiful environment and the refined sense of beauty of its inhabitants. To complete the picture, consider also the introduction of the Tokonoma alcove for displaying artworks and flowers as well as the popularity of the tea ceremony from the late Muromachi period through the Edo era and the fact that picture framers reflect the aesthetics of the tea masters.

How to make

Hanging scroll, rolled drapery put paper on the back of this newspaper and cloth with paste and reinforce and line at the whole all-out more after having let you join each part. We put paper with paste in order of lining, tension, facing on the frame, and sliding paper-door, screen, screen repeat and fit bounds last.

Scrolls and hanging scrolls are reinforced by gluing sheets of paper to the the back of the main paper or fabric surface and, after all parts have been joined together, the whole set is further reinforced. As for the fusuma (sliding screen), the byobu (folding screen), the tsuitate (partition), etc., the paper is glued on the base sheet, the sheet and the surface sheet in this order on the frame, and finally the external frame is put in place.
